One took place at the Abbey Gate at the airport, with the other at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance away.

He wrote on Twitter: "We can confirm that the explosion at the Abbey Gate was the result of a complex attack that resulted in a number of US & civilian casualties.

“We can also confirm at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance from Abbey Gate. We will continue to update.”

US officials have said eleven US marines and a navy medic were killed.

Officials do not think at this stage there were any UK casualties, military or civilian, and believe there were two explosions.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been updated on the situation at the airport in Kabul and will chair a Cobra meeting later this afternoon.

It comes after several countries on Wednesday urged people to avoid the airport, where an official said there was a threat of a suicide bombing.

Armed forces minister James Heappey said this morning that there is “very credible reporting” of an “imminent” and “severe” terror attack at Kabul airport.

In a tweet, BBC reporter Nicola Careem said: "The BBC has spoken to a senior health official in Kabul, who has told us that at least 60 people were killed and 140 others wounded in Kabul Airport explosions."
