The autumn harvest began on Saturday at the site of rice paddy art in Gyoda, Saitama Prefecture, where Mt. Fuji, white-crested waves, and a kabuki actor had been depicted using four different colored grains of rice in fields covering the 2.8-hectare area. 150 people selected from the public joined in and harvested "Sai-no-Kagayaki," a prefectural brand of rice.
The rice paddy art had been planted for the first time in two years, after being canceled last year due to the coronavirus. A 50-meter-high observation room overlooking the entire area has been visited by about 70,000 people since the rice was planted in June. "We are grateful for the many people who came to see the art despite the COVID-19 crisis," said a city official.
The remaining picturesque fields are slated to be harvested in mid-November.
