K-League offers first glimpse of football after coronavirus shutdown as Jeonbuk beat Suwon

No fans in the stadium, no spitting allowed on the pitch and substitutes wearing masks.

The first peek at what post-Covid-19 football would look like finally arrived as the K-League 1 season kicked off two months after it was originally scheduled to start.

In the 11am kick-off on Friday, UK football fans headed to YouTube to catch a glimpse of the clash between Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, the reigning Korean champions, and Suwon Bluewings.

The players lined up opposite each other, rather than the traditional adjacent form that the teams take up, as they kicked off the domestic season.

The atmosphere without fans was somewhat eerie, with occasional blasts over the PA system of pre-recorded chants from Jeonbuk's fans.

It appeared both sides were affected by the two-month break without football too as neither managed to conjure up a clear-cut chance in an uneventful first half.

But things livened up in the second period, with VAR used to determine whether Suwon's Neil Henry had handled inside his own area. Fortunately for Suwon, the referee decided the footage was inconclusive and play continued.

The visitors found themselves with a tough task with a quarter of an hour to go after Australian midfielder Tony Antonis was shown a straight red card for a late challenge.

And that proved costly as the league's oldest-ever player, 41-year-old Lee-dong Gook, came off the bench to head home from a corner with seven minutes to go to get Jeonbuk off to a winning start at the Jeonju World Cup Stadium.
