K.J. Wright thought he was gone before Seahawks re-signed him

Last week, the Seahawks signed linebacker K.J. Wright to a new deal to keep him in Seattle for two more seasons. But before the team reached out to him late last week, Wright thought he’d be looking for a new NFL home.

“I thought (I’m) toast,” Wright said during an interview with sports radio station KJR after he heard the news that Mychal Kendricks re-signed with Seattle for one more year.

“I honestly thought I was leaving,” Wright continued. “I thought I was gone. I was prepping my family. But they found something to make me happy, and I was like, ‘This is a perfect fit for me. Let’s get rolling.’ ”

Wright’s new contract amounts to two years at $15.5 million, with $8 million guaranteed in 2019. The linebacker, who was laid up with a knee injury the majority of last season, will need to prove he’s durable enough to play another year.

With Wright, Wagner and Kendricks all locked up ahead of the start of the season — pending Kendricks’ sentencing hearing in April for an insider trading conviction — the Seahawks have made a major step in keeping their linebacking corps together.
