K.J. Wright optimistic Bobby Wagner’s contract ‘will handle itself’

The Seattle Seahawks kicked off the first practice of training camp on Thursday. Although this summer has been far less turbulent than last – which included several drastic personnel changes and a holdout from safety Earl Thomas – the Seahawks still have a few more hurdles to jump.

For a second straight summer, Seattle is facing contract extension negotiations with not only an elite defender but an absolute pillar of the franchise. Linebacker Bobby Wagner is currently seeking a new deal, and while he is attending training camp, he is not actively practicing to avoid injury.

Naturally, the topic of Wagner’s negotiations is a major one at camp. When asked about his thoughts on it, fellow Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright is remaining upbeat about the best possible outcome.

“I don’t think he’s frustrated,” Wright said of Wagner Thursday. “I believe that something will happen and I’m pretty positive. The organization knows what he means to us and it’s kind of like I said back in OTAs it’s a no-brainer to get it done.”

Wright also stated he believes both the Seahawks and Wagner are close to agreeing on a new deal.

While Wagner may not be practicing, Wright thinks his mere presence at training camp is still impactful. When asked what it means to have Wagner around, Wright was complimentary of his friend and teammate.

“It feels good, he’s out there on the sideline just still sharing knowledge helping out the guys helping out me and for him to be present it just feels really good,” Wright continued. “And so, I’m really optimistic that everything will handle itself and he’ll be out there.”
