Jyothi Yarraji rewrites own NR to win 60m hurdles gold at Asian Indoor Athletics Championships

NEW DELHI: Rising Indian sprinter Jyothi Yarraji achieved a marginal improvement in her own national record, clocking 8.12 seconds in the women's 60m hurdles to secure a gold medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tehran on Saturday.

The 2022 Asian Games silver medallist in the 100m hurdles had previously set a record of 8.13 seconds at the same event last year, securing a runner-up position.

In the heats, the 24-year-old athlete topped her performance with a timing of 8.22 seconds. Subsequently, in the final, she outperformed Japan's Asuka Tereda (8.21s) to claim the top spot.

Lui Lai Yiu of Hong Kong (8.26s) secured the third position on the podium.

Yarraji holds the current title of the reigning Asian Outdoor champion in the 100m hurdles, triumphing in Bangkok last year.

Her remarkable achievements also include securing a silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Despite initially facing disqualification, Yarraji made a comeback and demonstrated her prowess in the event.
