Cristiano Ronaldo sends Juventus nine points clear at the top of Serie A

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opening goal and helped set up the second as Juventus extended their unbeaten start in Serie A with a 2-0 win over promoted SPAL on Saturday.

Ronaldo's latest goal was his ninth in Serie A, matching Genoa's Krzysztof Piatek in the race for the golden boot.

The goal came near the half-hour mark when Ronaldo beat everyone to redirect in a free kick from Miralem Pjanic.

In the 60th, Ronaldo's pull back on the counterattack set up a shot for Douglas Costa, whose effort was swatted into the path of Mario Mandzukic who scored from the rebound.

Juventus moved nine points ahead of second-place Napoli, who host Chievo Verona on Sunday.

Good afternoon and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of a host of European football on this fine Saturday.

First up, it's Neymar-less PSG up against Toulouse. We'll also have Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus facing off against SPAL too.

And later on, the main event, Atletico Madrid hosting Barcelona at the Wanda Metropolitano.

We'll have all of it for you right here throughout the day.
Let's start with the team news from Paris shall we. As expected, no Mbappe or Neymar for the hosts.

If there is a goal this afternoon anything like Layvin Kurzawa's in this very fixture last season, well, we'll be in for something special won't we?

So, what's at stake for both sides today at the Parc des Princes.

Well, Thomas Tuchel isn't taking the game lightly despite the fact that the Parisian club face a crunch Champions League game with Liverpool in midweek.

Depending on the results of Lille and Montpellier, the Ligue 1 holders could find themselves 15 points clear at the top of the table today.

Toulouse are towards the bottom of the pack sitting between 10th and 18th place, who are currently separated by just five points.

Kick-off in 30 minutes time.
Another record on the cusp of being broken. Kick-off in just five minutes.

1 min: PSG 0-0 Toulouse

And we're off at the Parc des Princes. How many will PSG notch up today?

5 min: PSG 0-0 Toulouse

Not a huge surprise that the hosts have seen the majority of the ball so far. Toulouse have set up in a 5-4-1 formation in a bid to try and reduce space for PSG, who are playing a 3-5-2 formation.

Seems like it may well be a battle of formations today.
GOAL!
GOAL! PSG 1-0 Toulouse (Cavani 9')

That's nine goals in nine Ligue 1 games for Cavani. Angel di Maria cuts inside and after Baptiste Reynet fumbles the Argentine's shot, Cavani receives an Adrien Rabiot header, flicks the ball past Kelvin Amian before smashing in at the near post.
14 min: PSG 1-0 Toulouse

Francois Moubandje's wild strike from 35 yards is the closest the visitors have come to a response.

The hosts look very very comfortable but will be aware of the pace of the likes of former Bournemouth forward Max Gradel's.
19 min: PSG 1-0 Toulouse

Cavani heads home for what would be his second after a headed pass from Thiago Silva, but he is rightly flagged offside.

Some interesting attire from the injured Kylian Mbappe today....

Meanwhile, here is the team news from the 5pm kick-off at the Allianz Stadium where Juventus are taking on SPAL.

26 min: PSG 1-0 Toulouse

Bit of a pause here after a clash between Angel di Maria and Christopher Jullien. The game has gone into a bit of a lull but PSG still look in cruise control.
Stunning from 'El Matador'.

35 min: PSG 1-0 Toulouse

Toulouse are really struggling to hold on to the ball when they win it deep in their own half and they are easily getting penned in by the hosts.

Very difficult at this stage to see how Toulouse are going to avoid a fifth defeat in six matches.
40 min: PSG 1-0 Toulouse

That's better from the visitors, who create a half-chance. Former Bournemouth man Max Gradel connects with a clipped cross from the right with an overhead kick but it poses no danger to Gianluigi Buffon's goal.

The Italian is in action a minute later though, tipping Gradel's whipped effort over the bar.
43 min: PSG 1-0 Toulouse

Despite their dominance in possession, the hosts have only had two shots on target this half.

They've looked open at times at the back as well and that has given Toulouse some encouragement with Gradel at the heart of everything.
HALF TIME
Half Time: PSG 1-0 Toulouse
Not the greatest of first halves at the Parc des Princes.

Edinson Cavani's ninth-minute goal looked like it was going to make it a long day the office for Toulouse.

But after that Alain Casanova's side dug in and did not allow another shot on target for Thomas Tuchel's side.

There hasn't been too much to do for Buffon either, but Toulouse settled down as the half grew on.

Second half coming up in just under ten minutes.
Just five minutes till kick-off in Turin where Juventus will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the Serie A table to nine points.

However, the only time Juventus dropped points in the league this season was at the Allianz Stadium, when they drew 1-1 with Genoa.

Player to watch…

Cristiano Ronaldo: The 33-year-old has not played for Portugal since they were knocked out at the last 16 stage of the World Cup by Uruguay, but he has been a regular figure in the Juventus side this season. From 12 appearances, the former Real Madrid man has scored eight goals and registered five assists, including a first goal at the San Siro in the 2-0 win over AC Milan last time out. With tough fixtures against Inter Milan and Roma coming up, the Old Lady will require Ronaldo to keep his goalscoring form up against SPAL.
