Juventus vs Inter and the no-nonsense Coronavirus protocol set to influence Serie A title race

A potential title showdown between Juventus and Inter could be played behind closed doors after an outbreak of Coronavirus in northern Italy.

Four games were postponed from yesterday's Serie A fixture card, with 209 confirmed cases as of today and eight deaths.

Juve and Inter, along with Lazio, are locked in a battle for the Scudetto , with the former two to meet in the Derby d'Italia in Turin on Sunday evening.

Maurizio Sarri's side lead Lazio, Celtic's Europa League foes, by a point with the Nerazzurri a further five back with a game in hand.

It's one of the biggest games of the season but it faces being played behind closed doors as authorities look to contain the outbreak.

Juve president Andrea Agnelli confirmed on Radio 24: "At the moment the priority for the country is the public health.

"Obviously there are discussions with the various stakeholders, but any decision has to be in the interest of the public health.

"The restrictions in Piedmont are in force until Saturday, so at this moment in time the game would take place with the fans.

"What I reiterate that is the priority of the club is the protection of the public health, in case it is played behind closed doors.

"At this part of the season every game is crucial."

Both teams have big fan bases outside of their home cities, so it was put to Agnelli that the match could be played in the south instead.

He replied: "Organising a game like Juventus vs Inter in a different stadium is complicated.

"I'd be sorry for the spectacle itself, for the spectacle of the league, because the product, the Italian league, would be damaged.

"But everyone must preserve the priority, which is the public health."
