Juventus make surprise decision after Mauricio Pochettino was tipped to replace Maurizio Sarri

Juventus have appointed Andrea Pirlo ahead of Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager after sacking former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

The ex-Blues manager was dismissed earlier today after being knocked out of the Champions League last 16 by Lyon on Friday night.

That result proved decisive with the Juventus board as they took immediate action despite the club winning a ninth Serie A title on the bounce.

With Sarri gone, all eyes turned to Pochettino, who was expected to replace the Italian in Turin.

However, it was widely stated across Italian media that it will instead be Pirlo that takes the reigns despite his lack of coaching experience and Juventus have now confirmed him as their new manager.

The Italian maestro was, in fact, appointed as the club's Under-23 boss just last week is yet to take charge of a single match as a manager.

Juventus become the latest club to opt for a former legend as their coach, with Chelsea and Arsenal both opting for that approach with Frank Lampard and Mikel Arteta in the last 12 months.

Pirlo returns to Juve having starred for the club between 2011 and 2015. The midfielder helped lead the Bianconeri to four straight Serie A titles, as well as the final of the 2014–15 Champions League.

It means Pochettino wait to return to work continues, having been sacked by Tottenham in November 2019 and replace by Jose Mourinho.
