Juventus legend delivers verdict on Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United transfer

Former Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon insists Cristiano Ronaldo was right to "think about himself" when deciding to leave Juventus and return to Manchester United last month.

Ahead of the transfer window closing just under a week ago, Ronaldo made it clear to those at Juventus that he wanted to leave the club ahead of the August 31 deadline and embark on a new adventure.

Manchester City looked certain to bring the five-time Ballon d'Or captain back to the Premier League, but United nipped in at the very last moment to ensure he sealed a fairytale return to the club, 12 years after leaving Old Trafford to join Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Ronaldo has come under criticism from some Juventus fans for wanting to leave the club just three years after arriving in Turin, but the Portuguese international's former clubmate Buffon believes Ronaldo was correct to think about what he personally wanted from his next move.

"I don’t think the fans should be surprised," Buffon, who is currently at Parma, told Radio Anch’io Sport. "He has the reputation of a great professional who rightly thinks about himself a lot.

"In these three years he has contributed with great performances and scored many goals. I don’t see anything illogical in his choice to leave, he thought a lot about it.

"Juve are in a transition period, I don’t know if it’s generational or the skeleton. You pay a bit when these things happen. When you have a coach like [Max] Allegri, maybe you don’t reach the target, but you get close to it."

Ronaldo arrived in Manchester on Friday and is currently in self-isolation ahead of linking-up with his new United teammates later this week. He could make his debut against Newcastle this weekend.
