Juventus and Man City lead race for long-term Man Utd transfer target Kalidou Koulibaly

Manchester United could be beaten by their cross-city rivals Manchester City in the race to sign Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

The two Premier League foes are among a number of Europe's top clubs said to be chasing the 28-year-old who is currently representing Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

United's interest in the centre-back has long been noted, while City are in need of defensive reinforcements to fill the void left by Vincent Kompany's return to Anderlecht as player-manager.

Tuttosport claim that Napoli will demand a fee of €120m (£107m) for the strong defender, with Pep Guardiola's men said to be ahead of their fierce local rivals in the battle to sign Koulibaly.

But the report also suggests that Serie A champions Juventus are another side keen on completing a move for the 28-year-old this summer.

Such a deal would reunite the centre-back with his former manager Maurizio Sarri, with the pair having worked together at Napoli from 2015-2018.

The Italian manager recently returned to his homeland after agreeing a deal to join the Old Lady following one season in England with Chelsea which culminated in winning last month's Europa League final in Baku.

And the 60-year-old is eager to add a new centre-back to the Serie A giants' squad, with Koulibaly his preferred target to strengthen his defence.

Koulibaly began his professional career with Metz, making his first-team debut in August 2010 before moving to Belgian side Genk two years later.

The Senegal international's form in the First Division A attracted the interest of Napoli, who parted company with £6.5m to sign the centre-back in July 2014.

The 28-year-old has continued to impress in Serie A, which has made him one of Europe's most sought-after defenders.

United have tracked Koulibaly for a number of years, but it seems they miss out on the Senegalese star when he finally departs Napoli this summer.
