Juvenile accused after cop shot by pellet gun in West Garfield Park

April 16--A 16-year-old boy has been charged after a Chicago police officer was shot with a pellet gun late Friday on the West Side.

The boy, who is not being identified because of his age, was charged as a juvenile with felony aggravated battery in a public place and aggravated assault, a misdemeanor, according to police.

Three other people in custody were released without being charged, police said.

About 10:30 p.m., the officer was working a vice operation near Madison Street and Cicero Avenue when the officer was wounded with a pellet gun, police said.

During the incident, two officers, including the wounded officer, returned fire but missed, police said. A pellet gun was recovered at the scene, police said.

The officer, whose wound was not considered life-threatening, was taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment and was later released from the hospital, according to police.

Late Friday evening, police officers blocked off about a block of Cicero north of Madison with yellow tape.

About a block east of that crime scene, officers also cordoned off part of a sidewalk on Madison at Kenton Avenue. Over a dozen officers there shined flashlights onto the sidewalk and the nearby buildings in search of evidence.
