Justise Winslow agrees to three-year, $39 million Heat extension

MIAMI _ The Miami Heat have agreed to a three-year, $39 million extension with forward Justise Winslow that will begin with the 2019-20 season.

The agreement, confirmed by an NBA source to the Sun Sentinel, now makes if difficult, if not impossible, for the Heat to trade the 2015 first-round draft pick until July 1 due to the "poison pill" element of the extension.

Winslow will continue to earn the $3.4 million he is due for this coming season in his final year on the NBA rookie scale. If traded, he could only be replaced at his current salary on the Heat roster, but would count $10.5 million to be acquired by another team.

The $13 million average puts Winslow in a similar salary range to teammates Josh Richardson, Dion Waiters, Kelly Olynyk and James Johnson.

Winslow, 22, has agreed to the extension but has yet to sign, with a Monday deadline for such agreements for 2015 first-round NBA draft picks.

Winslow's extension runs through the 2021-22 season, with a team option for that third year. It would be one of two possible Heat contracts on the books for that season, with Richardson holding a player option for 2021-22.

The agreement therefore will cut into the Heat's salary-cap space in 2020, when the contracts of Hassan Whiteside, Goran Dragic and Tyler Johnson will come off the team's books.

Three players from the 2015 first round now have agreed to extensions this offseason, with Minnesota's Karl Anthony Towns agreeing to a five-year deal worth a projected $190 million and Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker agreed to a five-year, $158 million extension.

Last year, four former first-round picks received rookie-scale extension by the October deadline: Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid, Gary Harris and T.J. Warren, whose extension was for a modest $47 million over four years.T
