RALEIGH, N.C. _ Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour used the word "terrible" in describing Friday's loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.
Brind'Amour liked the effort of his team a lot more Sunday at PNC Arena when the Canes and Vancouver Canucks went to a shootout before Carolina won, 4-3.
Justin Williams, again, had the shootout winner for the Canes (30-19-3). Teuvo Tervainen also had a shotoout goal for Carolina.
Canes goalie James Reimer stopped Bo Horvat, Vancouver's third shooter, to seal the victory and end the Canucks' five-game win streak.
Andrei Svechnikov's 20th goal of the season pushed the Canes ahead 3-2 at 14:32 of the third period. Svechnikov made a power move through the right circle and got off a quick forehand that beat goalie Thatcher Demko.
Elias Pettersson's second goal of the game tied the score 3-3 in the third _ the 23rd of the season for the dynamic forward. Pettersson also had a shot off the rush stopped by Canes goalie James Reimer with less than three minutes left in regulation.
Nino Niederreiter, who was a healthy scratch against Vegas, and Sebastian Aho both scored for the Canes in the second period. Pettersson's first goal, a spinning backhander, had given the Canucks a 1-0 lead after the first and defenseman Tyler Myers tied the score 2-2 in the second after the Canes surged in front.
The Canes received an injury scare late in the second period. Defenseman Brett Pesce appeared to be struck on the right hand by a shot, then fell to the ice bleeding, casting off his gloves.
Pesce, holding his right wrist, skated quickly toward the Canes bench as head trainer Doug Bennett came out to assist. Pesce was taken off the ice for treatment. Blood had to be cleaned off the ice.
Pesce returned to the game in the third period.
The Canes lost defenseman Dougie Hamilton to a broken fibula in the Jan. 16 game at Columbus. Hamilton, who had been selected for the All-Star Game, could be out for the remainder of the regular season, although the Canes aren't completely ruling out a possible return in late March.
With a four-game road trip upcoming, the Canes wanted a home-ice win Sunday as the right kind of sendoff. But, like the 4-3 loss to Vegas, they had to play from behind.
Much of the second period belonged to the Canes, who spent more time in the offensive zone. Niederreiter tied the score, beating Demko with a backhander. It was the seventh goal of the season for Niedereiter, who has had his shares of offensive struggles.
Later in the period, Aho was in scoring position but couldn't get his stick on a pass from Warren Foegele. But Aho scored moments later, banging in a shot from the low slot after defenseman Jaccob Slavin winged a long shot toward the net that bounced off Foegele.
The Canucks tied the score 2-2 after Aho was stopped by Demko on a shorthanded breakaway. With Slavin playing without a stick, Myers was unchecked between the circles.
