Justin Trudeau crisis: Canada PM facing calls to resign over corruption case

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was facing his biggest political crisis today after opposition leaders demanded he resign over claims that he interfered to help a building firm avoid a corruption trial.

He has refused to quit amid the scandal engulfing his Liberal party in an election year.

It erupted on Wednesday when his former justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould said she endured “sustained pressure” by his staff to drop the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin, which is accused of paying £28 million in bribes to the Gaddafi regime in Libya.

Mr Trudeau admitted raising the case with her, but said he was trying to protect jobs.

SNC-Lavalin is a major employer in Quebec, where the Liberals need to win seats to keep a majority.
