Justin Rose misses play-off but is in better place

Justin Rose is confident of being in contention for a first tournament win in 18 months, despite a missed putt on the 18th costing him a place in Charles Schwab Challenge play-off yesterday.

The Englishman had to make do with third place, a shot behind winner Daniel Berger, but it was a marked improvement from prior to lockdown, when he missed the cut in three of his last four tournaments.

Rose is in action again from Thursday at the RBC Heritage and said: “I’ve worked really hard the last three months. I wasn’t looking too pretty back in March, so it’s nice to turn it around and I feel really comfortable and confident going in the summer. Hopefully, we can keep this rolling.”

Rose, who turns 40 next month, had an 18-foot birdie chance at the last, which would have been enough to edge into the play-off.

“It did look good,” he said. “I knew it was a must-make putt. A couple of feet out, I thought I’d made it. I was delighted with the way I played.”

Meanwhile, world No1 Rory McIlroy was left to rue a dire six-over-par front nine which saw him slip out of contention.
