Justin Fields thought he had a free play on his first interception due to another coaching blunder

Chicago Bears fans don’t need another reason to want head coach Matt Nagy run out of town, but they just got one.

On Sunday, the Bears were trounced by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38-3 in a miserable showing where Justin Fields tossed three interceptions and Chicago’s defense was unable to stop Tom Brady. To add salt to the wound, in the Bears’ postgame press conference, Fields offered up a head-scratching explanation as to what happened on his first interception.

In the first quarter on third and five, Fields had to scramble out of the pocket due to pressure and tossed an interception to Dee Delaney, flipping field position for the Buccaneers. It was a rushed play all around, which Fields explained was due to the Bears’ coaches telling him Tampa Bay had 12 players on the field and that it would have been a free play.

Here’s how the interception to Delaney went down with seven minutes left in the first quarter.

That’s… not great from the Bears’ coaching staff! They’re really not setting Fields up for any kind of success if they continue to make coaching blunders as bad as that one.

Plus, this is the second week in a row Fields was intercepted off of what he thought was supposed to be a free play after last week’s fiasco against Green Bay.

You have to feel for Fields at this point as the Bears continue their miserable spiral down the standings.
