Justin Bieber wins artist of the year at American Music Awards

Justin Bieber won the artist of the year award on Sunday – the top prize at the American Music Awards.

Bieber also took home the trophy for favourite pop/rock male artist, while Carly Rae Jepsen won best new artist. Katy Perry was named best pop/rock female artist at the annual ceremony in Los Angeles.

The winners of the American Music Awards, founded 40 years ago as an alternative to the Grammys, are chosen entirely by fans who vote online for their favourites across pop, rock, country, hip hop, R&B and electronic dance music.

Bieber and Nicki Minaj performed together and separately at the awards.

The 18-year-old Bieber said: "I want to say this is for all the haters who thought I was just here for one or two years. I feel like I'm going to be here for a very long time," he said.

He also won favourite pop/rock album for Believe. He gave a stripped down, acoustic performance of As Long As You Love Me, sitting down to a guitar accompaniment. He transitioned to the dance-heavy Beauty and a Beat, where Minaj joined him on stage.

Minaj repeated her AMAs wins from last year, picking up trophies for favourite rap/hip-hop artists and album for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. She performed her new song Freedom.

Swift won her fifth consecutive award for favourite country female artist. "This is unreal. I want to thank the fans. You guys are the ones who voted on this," she said. Luke Bryan won favourite country male artist and Lady Antebellum favorite country group.

Swift performed of the pop song I Knew You Were Trouble.

Carly Rae Jepsen, who performed early in the night, won favorite new artist.

Carrie Underwood won best country album and performed Two Black Cadillacs.
