Justin Bieber performed a concert in Saudi Arabia despite calls from human rights campaigners for him to cancel the show.

The pop star, 27, took to the stage in front of a packed crowd in Jeddah to mark the end of the F1 Grand Prix on Sunday night.

His wife Hailey Bieber gave support by posting a video of him performing on Instagram, captioned: “Go baby.”

Other stars who performed at the controversial concert include rapper A$AP Rocky and singer Jason Derulo.

The fiancée of murdered Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi is among a number of critics who urged the singer not to perform.

In an open letter, Hatice Cengiz told the star that boycotting the concert would “send a powerful message to the world that your name and talent will not be used to restore the reputation of a regime that kills its critics”.

Saudi critic Khashoggi was killed by agents who worked for Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a visit to the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in 2018.

US intelligence claim that the prince approved the killing. But he maintains his innocence, claiming he had no prior knowledge of the incident.

Prince Mohammed attended the F1 race and was seen taking pictures with racing fans.

Human Rights Watch and others have urged celebrities to boycott the kingdom. They say events such as these take place in order to divert attention away from the country’s poor human rights record and help bolster its international standing.
