Justice LN Rao to supervise amendment of IOA constitution

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday appointed Justice LN Rao, former SC Judge, as the pointsman to supervise expeditious carrying out of amendments to the constitution of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), prepare electoral rolls and hold elections.

Keeping in view the threat from International Olympic Committee (IOC) to suspend IOA as the national Olympic body, a bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Hima Kohli referred to the fresh e-mail on behalf of IOC and repelled arguments from a medley of advocates for changing secretary general Rajeev Mehta.

What weighed with the court in keeping Mehta as secretary general of IOA is the advanced stage of preparations for the National Games in Gujarat from September 27 to October 12.

However, the bench took note of the factional war within IOA and the fact that Anil Khanna has resigned as acting president to prune the list of IOA delegates who would be going to Lausanne, Switzerland, to hold talks with IOC representatives for resolving the imbroglio. The IOA will now be represented by Mehta and Adille Sumariwalla.

Other participants are Abhinav Bindra, two govt representatives, SAI DG Sandip Pradhan, MYAS joint secretary Kunal and OCA DG Husain Al-Musallam.

The bench posted the matter for further hearing after the Diwali break.
