JustGiving fundraising appeal launched for the family of a little boy who died after he was thrown into a river

People are rallying round to support the family of baby Zakari Bennett, who died after being thrown into a river.

Zakari, believed to be 11 months old, was recovered from the River Irwell in Radcliffe, Bury, and taken to hospital, where he sadly passed away on Wednesday evening.

A fundraising campaign has now been launched on behalf of his family, after Zakari's mother Emma Blood took to Facebook to talk of her love for her son.

Organisers said they want to do anything possible to help.

So far the JustGiving appeal has raised more than £2,000, double the original target figure, with donations flooding in by the minute.

People giving donations have also send their heartfelt sympathies.

Carla Connor wrote: "Such a beautiful little boy, my heart is breaking as a mother.

"My thoughts are with you."

Another who gave money to the appeal wrote: "Your pain must be beyond words and all I can say is that I am so sorry for your loss."

All money raised would go towards Zakari's funeral and the family, the appeal states.

The tragic incident took place in Radcliffe town centre on Wednesday afternoon, at around 4.25pm.

Emergency crews rushed to reports of a child in the water.

Zakari was found some time later and taken to hospital, but later died despite the efforts of specialist doctors.

The M.E.N understands he was thrown into the river from an area near to a bridge at Blackburn Street.

He was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, then later re-arrested on suspicion of murder.

Greater Manchester Police are understood to be treating the investigation as domestic-related.

In the update, police said a Home Office post-mortem examination would take place on Friday.

Detectives urged witnesses to get in touch 'as a matter of urgency' and want to hear from anyone with images or videos.

Det Insp Wes Knights said: "This is an incredibly tragic incident which has taken the life of a baby boy, who we believe is only around 11-months-old.

"His family have understandably been left devastated by what has happened and we have specially trained officers providing them with support at this difficult time.

"We currently have a suspect in custody, who will be questioned by detectives later today, however our investigation does not stop there and we need anybody with information to come forward and help us get answers for this little boy’s loved ones.

"We know that there were a significant number of witnesses to what happened and I want to urge those people to come forward and provide us with as much detail as they can.

"It’s also possible that other people may have information about the circumstances leading up to the incident, as we know the baby had been in the area for a number of hours beforehand."
