Here's what's happened so far in the local elections

It's been a busy night at counts for the local elections in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire - so here's a round-up of what's been happening.

There have been polls in eight local areas and results are in for all three where counting started at 10pm - Nottingham, Ashfield and Broxtowe.

In Nottingham, Labour easily held on to control of the city council, but its number of seats dropped slightly from 52 to 50 (out of 55).

The Conservatives saw its number of seats drop from three to two, losing a seat in Wollaton West but holding on to two seats in Clifton West.

The big gains of the night came in Clifton East, however, where three Independent councillors were elected - Maria Watson, Kirsty Jones and Kevin Clarke.

It was a dramatic night in Ashfield, where Ashfield Independents gained overall control of the district council.

The group took 30 seats, up 18 seats on what it had previously held.

That meant significant losses for both Labour, which only retained two of its 14 seats, and the Conservatives, which went down from five to three seats.

The council previously had no party with an overall majority.

Meanwhile in Broxtowe, the Conservatives are going to lose control of the council, which will be left in no overall control.

One ward with two seats is being contested in six weeks' time, but as it stands Conservatives has 20 seats (down from 27), Labour 14 (up from 11), Lib Dems five (up from four), Independents two and Ashfield Independents two.

That means that even if the Conservatives take both seats in the outstanding ward, they will still be short of the magic 23 mark.
