Just six out of Leeds' 200 public playgrounds will open

Children will be able to return to just six out of the 200 playgrounds in Leeds this week when they open for the first time in four months.

Leeds City Council has announced that on Thursday, July 16, it will reopen the playgrounds at the Arium, Lotherton Hall, Middleton Park and Temple Newsam, as well as the two at Roundhay Park.

Signs have been installed to remind everyone to social distance, eating and drinking will be prohibited and a limited number of children will be allowed to use each piece of equipment, but the parks will not be supervised.

The council says is still working to reopen around 200 other playgrounds and outdoor gyms across the city.

It was forced to close all of them in March to try and curb the spread of coronavirus.

Councillor Mohammed Rafique, executive member for environment, said: "It is fantastic that we are able to open some of our play areas again.

"I would like to thank all the parents and children for being patient. It has been very difficult but we need to keep everyone safe and help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“We are grateful for your continued patience as we work towards making sure the equipment is cleaned and safe for use in line with government guidance.

“We ask the public to remain responsible, stay socially distant, and both adults and children need to follow good hygiene practices to ensure the play areas can be enjoyed by everyone.”
