'Just s***' - Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst brutally slams his Netherlands performance

Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst described his failure to score for the Netherlands against Gibraltar as "just s***".

Weghorst signed for United on loan for the remainder of the season in the January transfer window and he's remarkably started in all 18 matches since his arrival at Old Trafford, although he's only managed to score two goals across that period.

The 30-year-old has scored against Nottingham Forest and Real Betis and both of those goals were from rebounds.

The striker's poor form in front of goal also continued throughout the international break, as Weghorst played the full 90 minutes in the Netherlands' match against Gibraltar on Monday night but failed to score, despite having plenty of chances.

Rather incredibly, his nation had 87 per cent possession and recorded 51 shots against Gibraltar but they only won 3-0. Weghorst had opportunities to get on the scoresheet but he could not find the net, which he was clearly frustrated at.

Speaking after the game, Weghorst discussed his performance and described his failure to score as "just s***".

He told ESPN: “There were a few situations where I was close, but always just not. It's just... just s***. Bad luck? Whether it's just bad luck. Ultimately, it's also quality. You have to be honest about that too. You can call it bad luck.

"But that last ball of mine was allowed in. As a striker, you know that you can score in these kinds of matches. Then you can also remain standing for the entire match, then you would like to repay the trust. That sucks."

Netherlands legend Ruud Gullit was on punditry duty for the match and he added that Weghorst was not good enough for United.

Gullit said: "I always look at him in a weird way. I have a lot of admiration for him, but at the same time, I think: he is not good enough for Manchester United and the Orange. Every now and then you see defects."

Weghorst scored just two goals in 20 appearances for Burnley in the Premier League in 2021/22.

United do not have the option to make his loan move permanent.
