Just one person with coronavirus in a ventilated bed in Swansea Bay hospitals as infection rate falls

Swansea continues to have one of the highest coronavirus infection rates in Wales but only one ventilated bed in Swansea Bay is occupied by a coronavirus patient.

The latest figures, published by Public Health Wales, show that 23 areas of the city recorded fewer than two cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 in the seven days to April 24. This is the same number of areas that were classed as having "low numbers" of infections the previous week.

As of Thursday, April 29, the infection rate across Wales stands at 12 cases per 100,000, a slight increase from the 11.9 recorded on Wednesday. Newport reported the most cases on Thursday with 11, followed by Cardiff with nine, Swansea with eight, and Carmarthenshire with seven. The infection rate in Swansea has dropped from 25.9 per 100,000 last week to 21.5 in the last seven days.

How many people are in hospital with coronavirus in Swansea Bay?

Figures up until April 28 show that across the Swansea Bay University Health Board area, out of 1,133 general and acute beds in use, 17 are occupied by a Covid-19 case. This is compared to the 19 beds mentioned in last week's data up to April 21. This shows a slight decrease in last week's figure but three weeks ago there were 116 beds occupied by coronavirus patients in the Swansea Bay area.

And of the 25 "invasive" ventilated beds in use, just one is occupied by a Covid-19 patient, a decrease of two from last week's figure.

Which areas of Swansea currently have the highest and lowest rates of coronavirus?

Sketty and Ravenhill currently have the highest coronavirus infection rates in Swansea, with figures of 157.3 and 59.3 per 100,000 people, respectively, for the seven days leading up to April 24.

Last week, Ravenhill and Mynyddbach had the highest coronavirus infection rates in the city, with figures of 54.3 and 99 per 100,000 people, respectively, per 100,000 people. Sketty, now with the highest infection rate in Swansea, had one of the lowest last week. But the figures should be treated with caution as just a small number of cases in an area of low population can ramp up the coronavirus rate figure significantly, leading to big swings.
