
Hanging ferns known as tsuri-shinobu are seen at the Yorozuen shop in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo. Tsuri-shinobu were invented by a gardener in the Edo period (1603-1867) as a summer gift and eventually became a popular household decoration. Yorozuen is the only shop in Tokyo that specializes in these hanging ferns, and will produce about 1,000 of them by mid-August. This is fewer than usual, due to the cancellation of department store events and festivals amid the pandemic.
