Just four places in England see weekly Covid cases fall as virus rises in 98% of areas

Nearly every town and city in England is now recording a rise in Covid cases - with just four seeing a week-on-week fall.

Latest data from Public Health England reveal that Ribble Valley, Harborough, Torridge and Fenland are the only places where coronavirus infections fell in the week to Monday.

Cases rose in an alarming 98 per cent of the country's 315 local authority areas - with Tamworth in Staffordshire seeing a fivefold increase in a week.

Earlier today the Department of Health confirmed 27,125 people had tested positive for coronavirus - the fifth day in a row when the number has been more than 20,000.

There were 27 more deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the official death toll to 128,189.

It is estimated that one in 260 people have Covid-19 in England in the week to June 26 - up from one in 440 the previous week, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said today.

Hyndburn in Lancashire continues to have the highest rate, with 498 new cases in the seven days to June 28, the equivalent of 614.5 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up from 478.8 in the seven days to June 21.

Newcastle upon Tyne has the second highest rate, up from 324.9 to 574.3, with 1,739 new cases.

Tamworth in Staffordshire has the third highest rate, up from 109.5 to 554.1, with 425 new cases.

Alarming figures show 98 per cent of local authority areas recorded a rise in coronavirus cases (Andy Commins / Daily Mirror)

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

  • Tamworth (up from 109.5 to 554.1)
  • Oxford (77.4 to 431.6)
  • South Tyneside (168.9 to 432.5)
  • Gateshead (189.6 to 451.4)
  • Newcastle upon Tyne (324.9 to 574.3)

Earlier today German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said double-jabbed Britons should be able to have a holiday in Europe without quarantine in the "foreseeable future", following her opposition over the Delta variant.

She said travel restrictions are being reviewed for those who have received two coronavirus vaccinations, after holding talks with Boris Johnson at Chequers.

But she revealed she had expressed "grave concern" to the Prime Minister over the number of football fans being allowed to attend Euro 2020 matches at Wembley.

Mrs Merkel had previously urged EU leaders to impose quarantine restrictions on Britons regardless of their vaccination status because of concerns over a surge in cases of the Delta variant.

Following talks at the Prime Minister's country retreat in Buckinghamshire, she acknowledged that the strain first identified in India is now spreading "very rapidly" in Germany as well.

"We have adopted certain protective measures when we were not so familiar with the Delta variant," she told a joint press conference.

"We're reviewing continuously our travel restrictions and we think that, in the foreseeable future, those who have received double jabs will then, according to our classification, and Britain now obviously is a high incidence area, will be able travel again without having to go into quarantine."
