Just Eat launches drone deliveries that will fly your takeaway to you 'within 3 minutes'

If you’re planning on treating yourself to a takeaway this week, you may need to keep an eye to the skies.

Just Eat has teamed up with Manna Aero to trial drone deliveries that promise to have your takeaway with you ‘in 3 minutes.’

The trial is taking place at University College Dublin, where hungry students will be able to order drone deliveries from Just Eat, Ben & Jerry’s and local food brand Camile Thai.

Bobby Healy, founder and CEO at Manna Aero, explained: “It's clear that Drone delivery provides a faster, cleaner, safer, cheaper and higher quality alternative to road-based delivery. We are excited about how that will improve the world.”

The deliveries will be completed by custom-developed aerospace grade drones, which fly at impressive speeds of 80 kilometres/hour.

According to Manna Aero, this means that any deliveries within a 2km radius will be completed in ‘less than 3 minutes’.

While the service is currently only available on the University College Dublin campus, it will launch in South Dublin next month.

Amanda Roche-Kelly, Managing Director Just Eat Ireland said: “Technology is at the core of everything we do at Just Eat, so we’re delighted to be involved in these pioneering trials with Manna, who have clearly built a ground-breaking drone delivery system.

“Transforming the business of food delivery as we know it, this coming together of two complementary services will greatly improve the delivery experience for our customers and further adds to the countless ways we connect people with food, everywhere.

“We are just so proud to be Ireland’s first online food ordering and delivery platform to provide a commercial drone delivery offering to our customers.”

The news comes shortly after Just Eat revealed that it's developed the world's first seaweed-lined takeaway box.

Unlike most plastic takeaway boxes, the box is fully recyclable, and can decompose in just four weeks in a home compost.

While the lining is made from seaweed, the box itself is made from tree and grass pulp with no synthetic additives.

Thankfully, it’s been designed to be both water-resistant and greaseproof, and won’t affect the quality of your order.
