‘Just bring it back’: Woman buys couch from Costco in 2019. 6 years later, she tries to return it

A woman tries out Costco’s generous return policy for herself by hauling a 6-year-old couch back to the warehouse. However, some shoppers disagree with her use of the policy.

In a video with over 309,000 views, TikToker Chloe (@strugglebusstation) shares that she plans to move soon and was considering selling a couch she purchased from Costco in 2019. Then, another Costco customer gave her an idea.

“I was at Costco today, having to ask a question about my membership, and this guy brought in these coolers that were being held together by duct tape,” she says. When the Costco worker finishes with the customer’s worn-out return, she asks him if they would take her couch back.

“He goes, ‘Just bring it back. We’ll give you your money back,'” she recounts. The caption reads, “This is why I love Costco!”

What is Costco’s couch return policy?

Costco is well-known for its generous return policy, which lets members bring almost anything back to the warehouse for a full refund (with the exception of certain products, such as electronics and large appliances). Furniture can be returned at any time, regardless of condition.

In a follow-up video, Chloe shares that she successfully returned her old couch to Costco and got her money back.

“They took it back, no questions asked,” she says. “I got [the refund] on a gift card because I don’t have the card anymore.”

On the subreddit r/Costco, other members share their experience returning old furniture.

“We returned a 5-year-old mattress. Developed a sag in it like 6” wide and 4 ”deep. Sealy said take it back to Costco, so we did with the reference/ claim number,” one says.

“We returned two club chairs after a good 5 years,” another writes.

However, Costco’s policy may not be limitless. Some former members say they had their status revoked after making too many pricey returns.

What did Costco shoppers think about her return?

In the comments, some viewers suggest that Chloe took advantage of the generous return policy, putting it at risk for future shoppers if the warehouse takes notice.

“Aaaand this is what’s going to ruin it for everyone else,” one suggests.

“6 years of use… I would be mortified,” another says.

“This is the kind of stuff that will make them amend their generous policy for the worst!” a third adds.

However, others come to Chloe’s defense, pointing out that she even asked a worker before trying the return policy.

“People saying this is ‘abuse’ of their policy, but no it’s literally just their policy. If there was a problem, they would change it. This is why I bought my couch at Costco,” a commenter writes.

“I’ve done it. People are so ashamed that they have to project & shame others. After I returned mine, I went right back inside & bought a new one,” another says.

“This is why Costco customers are so loyal. Costco understands that they will make far more money by treating customers well-over the top even,” a third points out.
