'Just a trooper:' Why Margy, 88, is glad to be back at the barre

Barre instructor and professional dancer Morgan Gruell with Margy Basham.

The coronavirus pandemic and its social restrictions took away so much for the Sunshine Coast's Margaret 'Margy' Basham, but it was her dance class she missed most.

The 88-year-old cares less about bars and more about barre — a form of exercise that combines ballet movements with Pilates and yoga and is paired with thumping pop music.

Until the fog of the pandemic locked her out, the 88-year-old had been attending classes three times a week for about five years at her local gym.

And with the loss of her workout, her hard-earned strength and flexibility had begun to disappear.

But now that restrictions are easing in Queensland, she's making up for lost time.

"It's affected me immensely," she said.

"I found it very hard today, even though this is about the fourth time I've come since the shutdown thing.

"I'd like to have the strength back in my legs, but I realise I'm never going to have it."

From July 10, Queensland gyms, health clubs and studios will be allowed up to 100 people if they meet space requirements of four square metres per person.

She said the appeal of the barre class was partly that the studio had a bar around the entire room, giving her something solid to hold on to.

"That's why I hang on all the time," she said.

"They keep saying to me, 'Don't have a fall! Don't break anything'. So I try not to break anything."

Her trainer Morgan Gruell has worked around the world as a professional dancer, including with France's famous Moulin Rouge.

She describes Margy as a "superstar".

"We get our legs up on the bar to stretch at the end of class and she gets her leg up there," she said.

"She might need a bit of help but she gets her leg up there. And she is just a trooper.

"She has a chair pose that's really great — that's where you hang on to the bar and you sit down, like you're sitting on a chair — she gets right down there and she'll hold it."

Those not familiar with barre received something of a crash course from the Prime Minister earlier this year when he mispronounced it as "bar-ray".

"I died on the inside. I laughed. I just loved him so much for that," Ms Gruell said.

"He said, 'I'll have to look up what that is'. And then the next time he pronounced it, he got it correct -- I just think it was awesome."

Australian health departments say over 65s should do at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most, if not all, days.

Ms Basham agrees and is keen to have others join her on the floor.

"After the first day in a gym, I'm sure they'd be hooked on it," she says.

"It's such a social thing. And the exercise is just the icing on the cake, I reckon. I love it."
