Just 5 banks benefit as 230,000 Brits leave their existing providers

In 2013 new rules came in, meaning if you chose to leave your bank, you new bank would guarantee everything went smoothly.

It's far to say it proved popular - with more than six million Brits taking advantage of the 7 day switching guarantee service since it launched.

Matthew Hunt from the Current Account Switch Service said: “Exceeding six million switches is a substantial landmark, and it’s great to see that so many people have made use of the Current Account Switch Service to find a bank account that suits them better."

But as well letting us know how many people have moved overall, the Current Account Switch Service has also revealed the banks people are abandoning as well as signing up to.

This is who they're joining - and leaving - fastest.

A lot of people moved to Monzo (PA)

While 230,000 people switched in the three months, to September, just five banks gained more than a thousand customers as a result.

HSBC saw the most people join overall, at 47,477, but also saw a lot of customers walk away (31,695).

By contrast, Nationwide had almost as many people join (41,248) but lost just 14,818 customers – meaning almost three people joined for every leaver.

But in terms or ratio – the clear winner was digital-only bank Monzo, which had more than 13 people switch to it for every person who left.

Banks people are joining fastest

  1. Monzo - 13 people joining for every leaver
  2. Starling - 9 people joining for every leaver
  3. Nationwide - 2.8 people joining for every leaver
  4. NatWest - 1.6 people joining for every leaver
  5. HSBC - 1.5 people joining for every leaver

Triodos-Bank and Ulster-Bank also saw more people join than leave, with their overall numbers of customers rising by 367 and 313 pople respectively.

Tesco Bank was one of the biggest losers (PA)

At the other end of the scale it was terrible news for the Bank of Ireland, which saw 41 people leave for every joiner.

But the bank that more people left than any other was HSBC, at 31,695, however it convinced even more people to join it .

In terms of net losses, Halifax came 'top' - ending the three month period with 12,058 fewer current account customers.

Banks customers are leaving fastest

  1. Bank of Ireland - 41 people leaving for every new customer
  2. Tesco Bank - 10 people leaving for every new customer
  3. Co-operative bank - 4.2 people leaving for every new customer
  4. RBS - 2.4 people leaving for every new customer
  5. Barclays - 2.1 people leaving for every new customer
  6. TSB - 2.1 people leaving for every new customer
  7. Clydesdale Bank - 2 people leaving for every new customer
  8. Lloyds Bank - 1.8 people leaving for every new customer
  9. Halifax - 1.7 people leaving for every new customer
  10. Santander - 1.3 people leaving for every new customer

AIB (down 948), Bank of Scotland (down 620) and Danske (down 367) also lost more people than joined them.
