Just 12 countries may be approved for foreign holidays this year

People living in the UK may only be allowed to visit 12 countries for summer holidays this year, according to reports.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is due to give an update this month on whether foreign travel will be allowed in the summer.

The Prime Minister will give an update on Monday, then new Covid rules come into force on April 12 - and a review of foreign travel is expected at around the same time.

But according to reports the number of countries people could be allowed to visit may be severely restricted.

France has just gone into another national lockdown.

The traffic light system for travel - designating countries as red, green or amber, could be unveiled on Monday.

But the Daily Telegraph reports that only about a dozen destinations could be categorised as 'green' and therefore safe to travel under Covid restrictions by June.

The paper claims that Malta, Gibraltar, Portugal, Israel, Canada, Barbados, the UAE and the US could all be put into the lowest category because of their plans to vaccinate half the adult population by mid-May.

Three other popular destinations, Spain, Greece and Turkey, would reportedly be on the amber list, which includes quarantine measures.

It is likely that huge popular holiday destinations in France and Italy will be off limits, as both countries battle spiralling Covid cases and deaths amid a third wave.

A government source reportedly said: "It is still too early to say where and when people will be able to go on holidays but there will be detail about what that will look like."
