Jussie Smollett to be released from jail on bond, court orders during appeal of conviction

Jussie Smollett is to be released from jail on bond, a court has ordered during appeal on his conviction of staging a fake hate crime, according to AP.

The former Empire actor, 39, was sentenced to 150 days in Cook County Jail after being found guilty of lying to police about the attack.

He will be released on a $150,000 personal recognisance bond and can now leave the Chicago prison while his lawyers work on his appeal.

He had been behind bars for just six days of his sentence so far and was serving his time in psychiatric care where he is said to have been sleeping on a "restraint bed".

After receiving his sentence last Thursday, Jussie protested his innocence and told the judge that if he died in jail it would be the court's fault.

"I am not suicidal," he told the court. "If anything happens to me when I go in there, I did not do it to myself. And you must all know that."

On Tuesday he was moved into general population in the detention centre.

At his sentencing, Samuel L Jackson, Reverend Jessie Jackson, and Black Lives Matter were among those to write letters to the judge requesting "mercy".

Ever since his sentence, his lawyers and family had been pressing for his release as they claimed he was in physical danger while he was in prison.

They claimed that he had received racist and homophobic threats and also said he would be highly susceptible to contracting Covid-19 while behind bars.
