A jury has been sent out to consider their verdict in the murder trial of a woman who stabbed her partner in the chest.
Joanne Moran, 42, of Bridge Road, Litherland is currently standing trial at Liverpool Crown Court accused of murdering Jonathan Gibbons. She has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder and one count of manslaughter.
Moran and her partner, Mr Gibbons, had been playing cards and drinking vodka and whisky in their living room for over 12 hours on October 30 last year, when an argument ensued at around 4am. There was one other person at that address during the incident, but he did not witness it directly.

An argument broke out between the witness and Mr Gibbons, during which time they shouted at each other and Mr Gibbons allegedly told the witness he would “stab him and get someone to shoot him”. Andrew O’Byrne KC, prosecuting, previously told the court that the witness “did not seem to be unduly concerned by that” and went to another room in the house so did not witness the stabbing.
The defendant and Mr Gibbons had also been arguing, when Moran stabbed him in the chest with a small black-handled knife, causing his death. During the trial, Moran admitted to stabbing and killing Mr Gibbons, but claimed she did not mean to do so.
While giving evidence to her trial, Moran repeatedly claimed she did not remember picking up the knife, or going into the kitchen to get it. When asked by her defence counsel, Gordon Cole KC, what she remembered happening, Moran said: “I remember arguing with Jon and then I remember the feeling when I hit him with the knife in his chest.
“I was just shocked when it connected with him and I remember him looking at me as if to say ‘what have you done’?” When asked how she felt at that moment, she said “terrible.”
Mr Cole also asked her if she regrets what happened, to which she responded “I do.” The trial has been taking place at Liverpool Crown Court since last Monday, March 3.
