Jury finds woman did mug OAP - leaving her bruised and battered

A woman awaits sentence after being found guilty of mugging an 88-year-old, leaving her face battered and bruised.

Joan Hollington was spun to the ground after she was targeted for her handbag as she walked with her husband.

She was left with a broken nose, a fractured wrist and cuts and bruises and when her bag was recovered it was missing £80 to £90 and her bank card.

Rosanna Cooper, 31, of no fixed address, was charged with robbery after the incident on January 10.

She admitted fraudulent use of the pensioner's card, which she claims she was given.

After a trial which started on July 11 a jury of eight women and four men found Cooper guilty following four hours and 46 minutes' deliberation.

The verdict was by a majority of 11-1.

Trial Judge Judge Julian Lambert remanded Cooper in custody, pending a probation report, for sentencing on September 4.

The judge told the jury Cooper was also in trouble for supplying drugs to undercover police.

He thanked the panel for its care and consideration in the case.

In the trial at Bristol Crown Court the jury watched a video-recorded interview police had with a bruised Mrs Hollington on Tuesday, January 15, at Weston General Hospital.

Mrs Hollington said she had a doctor’s appointment in Milton Road, Weston-super-Mare, at 2.30pm.

She described how she and her 89-year-old husband Patrick were walking on Colonel Stephens Way to the bus stop when something dashed out and grabbed her handbag from her left hand and she fell flat on her face on gravel.

She said: “I vaguely remember a small figure running away.”

A woman came out and offered help and police and an ambulance were called.

Mrs Hollington said: “I had a towel over my face because it was bleeding profusely.”

The OAP said the robber yanked her bag by the handles, she span around and fell on her face.

She told the court: “If I realised she was so desperate I would have let her have it.

“It was so quick. Just one really great, mighty tug.

“It took my arm with it and I fell on my face.”

When Mr Hollington realised the bag was snatched he tried to identify the culprit, the court heard.

“It is difficult to think it happened to me,” she said. “It was a small figure and it was running very quickly.

“It could even have been a young teenager, it was very agile as it moved.

“It was such a fleeting glimpse, it just kept running.

“It was bluey, greeny, grey, it wasn’t a bright colour.”

Witnesses placed Cooper near the scene, but Cooper told the jury she had not been there.

She said she had her own money from prostitution and someone had given her the bank card, which was rejected when she tried to use it in a shop.
