Jurors from Hamilton Sheriff to watch trials from East Kilbride’s Odeon

Jury trials are set to resume at Hamilton Sheriff Court next week after cases were halted for 10 months because of Covid-19.

Jurors will view proceedings from East Kilbride’s Odeon cinema as social distancing rules make it impossible for them to sit together in a courtroom.

Five cases were allocated for Monday, January 18, at pre-trial hearings held before Christmas.

Two of those were supposed to go ahead last April, but were called off along with most of the court business when the pandemic struck.

The East Kilbride venue will also accommodate jurors dealing with Airdrie Sheriff Court trials.

Cinemas across Scotland are being used for jury trials as court officials attempt to deal with a huge backlog of cases.

Cases involving juries are generally the most serious ones to be dealt with at the sheriff court.

Summary trials – where a sheriff sits alone – resumed in the summer, but numbers are being cut again amid concern over growing Covid cases.
