Jurgen Klopp told to forget about top four and prioritise winning Champions League

Jurgen Klopp has been urged to concentrate on winning the Champions League as Liverpool's top four hopes hang by a thread.

The Reds saw off RB Leipzig in the last 16 this week and will be in the draw for the quarter-finals.

Winning Europe's premier club competition would appear their best chance of qualifying for next season's tournament.

Liverpool currently sit in eighth - seven points off fourth-placed Chelsea - following a poor run of form.

Klopp has seen his side lose their last six at Anfield with injuries and a lack of quality seriously hampering their ambitions.

As a result former Red Dietmar Hamann believes his compatriot should put his focus on winning the Champions League.

“As far as BVB’s chances in the quarter-finals are concerned, no matter who advances next week, Dortmund and FC Porto are the biggest outsiders of the eight remaining teams,” he told Sky Sport Germany.

“For Liverpool FC with Jürgen Klopp, I think the chance of winning the Champions League is greater than finishing in the top four in the Premier League and thus qualifying for next season’s top flight.

“Klopp’s situation with Liverpool was similar to the one he had in his last year at Dortmund.

“He is a seasoned coach; his sovereignty is one of his greatest strengths, so he can handle it.”

Klopp has been been quizzed on whether he would rest players for league games in an effort to prioritise Europe.

But he was quick to rule out that possibility.

“That will never happen,” he said.

“There is no game we can play and lose and say: ‘It was because of the lineup.’ Liverpool is too big and too many people are interested in us."
