Jurgen Klopp told to copy winning Chelsea strategy at Liverpool as title race hots up

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has told the Reds that they need to become more like Chelsea if they are to consistently challenge for honours.

The two sides are currently embroiled in an intense battle for the Premier League crown alongside Manchester City - albeit with the pair having stuttered slightly over recent weeks.

Regardless, both Liverpool and Chelsea have enjoyed glory over recent seasons by both winning the Champions League, whilst the Reds also lifted the domestic league crown in the 2019/20 campaign.

However, Carragher believes that their attitude and ambitions need to be more aligned with Chelsea’s if they are to consistently be in the running for major honours.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, he said: “His [Klopp] team have not won enough.

“Out of context, that sounds extremely unfair. A better way of putting it is that they have not won as much as their performances have deserved.

“To put it simply, Liverpool need to become more like Chelsea.”

He continued: “What they have done so well during the Roman Abramovich era is to become serial trophy collectors: five FA Cups, three League Cups, two Europa League titles. That’s in addition to being Champions League winners twice.

“The ambition has not changed at Stamford Bridge since they were the side everyone else was trying to catch in the mid-2000s.

"Chelsea will go into every season intending to compete for the Premier League and Champions League. But they have proven adept at lowering their sights to ensure different eras have maximum reward for the football produced.”

As it stands, Chelsea and Liverpool sit second and third, respectively, in the Premier League table, with Manchester City holding an eight-point gap over Thomas Tuchel’s men in second place.

Their title challenges will be given a key examination this weekend as they come together to face each other at Stamford Bridge.

Defeat for either side could be terminal for their hopes of clawing themselves back into the race for the Premier League title, whilst a win would certainly be a big boost - especially with Manchester City going up against a resurgent Arsenal side at the Emirates Stadium.
