Jurgen Klopp told he 'cannot rely on Joel Matip' in warning over Liverpool transfers

Jurgen Klopp has been warned that he must not rely too much on Joel Matip after the defender’s latest injury setback.

Matip was the only fit senior centre-back following the injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, as well as the summer sale of Dejan Lovren.

However, the Cameroon international suffered a similar fate to his teammates during the 1-1 draw with West Brom on Sunday evening.

It remains to be seen how long Liverpool will be without Matip, but it looks like he will spend some time on the sidelines.

The blow is another in a string of setbacks for Matip during his time at Anfield.

And former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock insists that Klopp must sign a new centre-back in January to remedy the situation.

"I personally feel that they will have to go into the transfer market," he told Sky Sports.

"You have Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips as backup, but you cannot rely on Joel Matip.

"His injury record since he joined Liverpool (means) he misses far too many games. He is injury prone.

"You can't rely on him for a consistent run of 10-15 games. You always feel is going to break down at some point.

"We know Liverpool have had huge problems missing Van Dijk and Gomez.

"But you need a decent backup pairing (at centre-back) you can rely on and they can't rely on Joel Matip."

Liverpool have been linked with moves for Schalke’s Ozan Kabak, Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli and RB Leipzig star Dayot Upamecano.

Kabak could reportedly be available for just £22m, and appears to be the most logical move.

According to Eurosport, the 20-year-old has been cleared to leave by Schalke, and a low price tag could make him the ideal signing for Klopp.
