Jurgen Klopp strengthens Liverpool defensive options ahead of January transfer window

Liverpool have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Stuttgart to recall Nathaniel Phillips from his loan spell in January.

Finding himself down the pecking order at Anfield, the centre-back joined the 2. Bundesliga side temporarily back in August and was scheduled to spend the full season with them in Germany.

However, with Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip both currently sidelined through injury, and the Reds unsure when the duo will return, Klopp has moved to strengthen his squad by recalling Phillips after being left with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez as his only senior available options.

Meanwhile, having seen Phillips make 11 appearances in all competitions during his time with Stuttgart, the German side have announced that the two clubs have agreed into looking into the possibility of the defender returning to Germany at the end of their winter break at the end of January.

The 22-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for Liverpool but has impressed when featuring for the Reds in pre-season at the start of the last two campaigns.

Ineligible to face Sheffield United on January 2 due to Premier League regulations , Phillips becomes Klopp's second mid-season addition to his squad after Takumi Minamino and will be available to face Everton in the FA Cup on January 5.
