Jurgen Klopp stops getting it wrong as Liverpool finally make vital change

There are more than a thousand miles between Budapest and Anfield.

This display, though, was light years away from the usual fare Liverpool have been coughing up on their own patch in recent weeks.

And how it was needed, the Reds delivering their best performance since the turn of the year to ensure their pursuit of silverware remains alive.

Not for the first time in the Premier League era, the Champions League is offering solace from domestic woes.

When Mohamed Salah prodded in his 25th goal of the season on 71 minutes, it was Liverpool’s first goal from open play in a designated home match since December 27 – a wait of 779 minutes.

That it came at the Puskas Arena in Hungary and not Anfield means that statistic will remain somewhat disputed.

What wasn’t in question, however, was the determined, composed fashion in which Jurgen Klopp’s side highlighted their European knowhow to deal comfortably with the young upstarts of RB Leipzig.

Sadio Mane’s strike three minutes later – the 100th goal scored in all phases of the Champions League in 44 games under Jurgen Klopp – added the sheen the Reds’ performance deserved.

True, until Salah’s strike, there was a danger of history again repeating as Liverpool frittered away a succession of presentable chances.

But that was in the knowledge of already having a two-goal lead from the first leg.

Where Klopp has got it wrong in recent weeks, here he was emphatically right, even down to Divock Origi emerging from the bench to instantly set up Mane’s clincher.

And what a difference it makes to have players performing in their usual positions, Fabinho back in central midfield, centre-backs playing centre-back.

Nobody was asked to do anything with which they are not accustomed, and it showed.

In truth, Leipzig were hugely disappointing across the two legs, far too reverential to a Liverpool team whose league struggles are bordering on the alarming.

A tougher test await for Klopp’s side in the quarter-finals, but this will surely put an extra spring in their step ahead of the final two months of the season.

The template has been set, the standard re-established. Now Liverpool have to build on it.
