Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp dismisses worrying Thiago Alcantara rumours

Jurgen Klopp has dismissed rumours Liverpool could be without Thiago Alcantara for the remainder of the season, writes Ian Doyle.

But the midfielder is facing an extended spell on the sidelines as the Reds grapple with another availability issue.

Thiago hasn’t played since the 3-1 Premier League home win over Newcastle United on December 16 after suffering an unspecified hip injury.

His continued absence prompted speculation over the weekend the 30-year-old is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, with various claims on social media suggesting he could be out until March or the summer.

And while not being drawn on providing a timeline for Thiago’s return, Klopp has revealed the midfielder will begin his rehab in earnest on Monday.

Virgil van Dijk went into the Shrewsbury Town dressing room at full-time to pay tribute to the League One outfit following their performance in their 4-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, writes Theo Squires.

The Shrews took a surprise lead at Anfield only for goals from Kaide Gordon, Roberto Firmino and a Fabinho brace to book Jurgen Klopp’s side’s passage to the FA Cup fourth round.

Shrewsbury manager Steve Cotterill was full of praise for Liverpool, and Van Dijk in particular following his classy gesture, but told reporters after the final whistle he felt the scoreline flattered the Reds.

“It’s been a great day for the football club. it isn’t a 4-1 scoreline,” he said. “We would have liked to have had a little bit more of a go at them but it was very, very difficult for us to get the ball.
