Jurgen Klopp shares his plan for future Liverpool success ahead of Club World Cup final

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool hope to be in a position where the squad can confuse themselves about the trophies they've won.

The Reds picked up the Champions League in June, lifting the European Cup for the sixth time in the club's history but crucially giving Klopp his first major trophy as Anfield boss.

That appears to have been a breakthrough moment for the club, who have now opened a 10-point gap at the top of the Premier League table and face Flamengo in the FIFA Club World Cup final on Saturday.

The suggestion that the squad can string together multiple successes - and therefore struggle to recall when they won certain trophies - is obviously something of a mantra at the club, and was repeated by James Milner in Doha this week .

Klopp elaborated on the notion in the new At Home with Colin Murray podcast on BBC Radio Five Live and the BBC Sounds app , where the presenter asked him if he faced an issue in keeping his players' feet on the ground after winning the Champions League.

“It was not a problem at all. The decision we made with the boys was that it’s not about winning one thing, it’s about winning," said Klopp.

"That win (over Tottenham in the final) was an important one, and for two weeks or so you have that feeling of ‘it’s still true, that’s unbelievable’, but that really ends at one point.

“It’s just the start. We always agreed on that. We like to think that we’ll meet in 20-30 years, look back and mix it up (recounting successful campaigns) – ‘that was 2019!’ ‘no, no, that was 2020!’ – That’s the plan.

"If it will be like this we don’t know, but at the moment we have the chance to confuse ourselves a bit in the future.”
