Jurgen Klopp says Mohamed Salah usually scores Real Madrid chances "with closed eyes"

Jurgen Klopp says playing in the Champions League next season is "very important" for Liverpool after they were left with only one route to back European football's top table.

Liverpool were unable to overturn their first leg deficit against Real Madrid in their quarter-final second leg at Anfield, missing several chances as they were held to a goalless draw to go out 3-1 on aggregate.

Mohamed Salah missed a couple of presentable chances in the first half as they Reds failed to make their opportunities count, and Klopp was left ruing the misses.

"It's a little bit ourselves this year," he told BT Sport.

"We've had games this season, ridiculous games, where we should have won but we didn't finish the situation. We have to take that.

"That's how it is. We know how many times Mo Salah would finish these type of things; with closed eyes. But in this moment, not.

"There were a lot of situations. Second half, after 60 minutes, they took a bit of control. They had more of the ball.

"We made the changes and timing maybe wasn't right.

"We didn't come through that well. We lost a bit of rhythm. Tried a bit too hard.

"Tonight it was absolutely OK but we are out anyway."

The Reds now turn their attentions towards their battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League, where they go to Leeds United on Monday.

"We have to (try for top four)," added Klopp.

"We love this competition. It's very important for the club for different reasons. It doesn't make it easier.

"Obviously we can now concentrate unfortunately on the Premier League. That's what we will do.

"Monday night against Leeds is the next challenge. We will have to work our socks off to get anything."
