Jurgen Klopp salutes defining game of Liverpool title win ahead of rematch

Jurgen Klopp has highlighted the importance of November's win over Aston Villa to his Liverpool side's Premier League title triumph.

The Reds were trailling at Villa Park back on November 2 to Trezeguet's early opener and looked set to have their 10-month unbeaten run brought to a halt.

Roberto Firmino had earlier seen a goal chalked off thanks to a VAR check for an errant armpit before Andy Robertson levelled the game up with three minutes of normal time remaining.

And it was left to Sadio Mane to nod home a corner in the 94th minute to make sure the Reds left Villa with all three points.

At the time, the victory was enough to preserve their six-point lead and Liverpool stormed ahead from that day, officially clinching a first title in 30 years with a 23-point advantage over Manchester City last week.

Asked if Klopp thought the result was pivotal to the successful campaign, he said: "I thought [that win] was so important.

"Because the season before showed you have to be pretty much perfect, results-wise to win the league.

"Manchester City usually win all their games and that was obviously the case the year before.

"So when we equalised with the pressure we made in that situation, I was not too surprised.

"We need luck, it was a good cross from a good position but what I loved most in that game was how Robbo took the ball, actually!

"We didn't know that we would win the game, but we thought we would give it a proper try.

"It was not about Aston Villa, no, it was clear we had to do that in all games. And that is why I knew it was important because as a manager you have to shout 'come on! two minutes to go, you have a chance!'.

"You pretty much have no chance but if the players do it by themselves then you know there could be another moment in the game and that is why it was so important."
