Jurgen Klopp's warning for Trent Alexander-Arnold as Liverpool boss discusses 'really hard' pre-season

Jurgen Klopp has warned Trent Alexander-Arnold that Kyle Walker's omission from the England squad doesn't mean the Liverpool man is an automatic pick under Gareth Southgate.

Alexander-Arnold, who was part of the Three Lions' contingent for last summer's World Cup, was named in the 25-man squad on Thursday for upcoming games with Bulgaria and Kosovo.

Also named in the list were club team-mates Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, while Southgate has also selected Manchester United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Atletico Madrid man Kieran Trippier.

Southgate has three specialist right-backs to choose from for the Euro 2020 qualifiers next month, while Reds centre-back Gomez is also capable of operating in the role.

Klopp believes Alexander-Arnold is good enough to make the spot his own with the national side, but urged against complacency given the plethora of options available to Southgate.

"He had [difficult] moments already, it is not that his career went just like this [straight up]," Klopp said.

"He had moments and will have [more]. He is a very young lad. I have no clue why Gareth made the decision but I don't think Kyle is that old to not have another chance anymore.

"It is a sign that England have a couple of really good opportunities with young players in Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Trent.

"Last year Kieran Trippier played there in the World Cup and was providing wonderful crosses, so there are obviously a couple of options.

"That creates a situation for a manager where you have to make a decision. But that doesn't mean that from now on Trent is the No.1 full-back for the next 20-years.

"He has the skills to do so, but there are a lot of things you have to make sure. First and foremost that you are physically always ready and in the very beginning that was the biggest challenge for Trent if you remember because he was a kid. That is normal. That got better and better.

"This season the pre-season was really hard. There is a lot to improve there have been a lot of difficult moments in his career already but no one sees them on the outside because at the weekend most of the time he could really perform and his improvement has been incredible, 100 per cent.

"I am happy for him if he now has that position and is a bit closer to the first line-up. I think the last England game before the summer [against Switzerland] that was exceptional. After that game I thought ‘wow.’

"That was unbelievable he was involved in pretty much every offensive situation."

Alexander-Arnold could feature when the table-topping Liverpool travel to Burnley on Saturday evening.
