Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Edinson Cavani, with the Uruguayan set to complete a medical over the weekend.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been in the market for additional firepower for much of the summer as he looks to mount a challenge to champions Liverpool.
Jadon Sancho was most heavily linked, but his £108m valuation looks set to be a stumbling block too high for Old Trafford bosses to climb.
Barcelona ’s Ousmane Dembele has also been touted as a potential short-term option, as United’s search got closer to wire.
But it now looks like Solskjaer will ditch his strategy of buying young players, to bring in the vastly experienced striker.
The 33-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving PSG, but has enjoyed a prolonged series of success since moving to European football in 2007.
After successes in Italy, he moved to PSG in 2013, scoring exactly 200 times in his spell at the Parc des Princes.
And although it could feel as if United are having to settle for second best, Cavani is a player that managers up and down the country will now have to worry about.....just ask Jurgen Klopp.
Back in January, Cavani was linked with Liverpool’s Champions League opponents Atletico Madrid and the German admitted he didn’t want to have to contend with him.
He said: “I think that [Alvaro] Morata and [Joao] Felix are already dangerous enough.
“They have enough good strikers so I hope they don’t sign Cavani.
“But I heard that Thomas Tuchel said he needs him as well. I haven’t really started analysing Atletico, I watched them a lot but not on an analysis basis.
“We will do that and we will see if we will have to involve Cavani or not.”
Jose Mourinho also appreciates his quality, after he spent much of that January window trying to bring him to Tottenham.
With his move set to be confirmed in the coming hours, Klopp looks set to finally come up against the man he hoped not to see.
