Jurgen Klopp's stance on Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli amid shock Liverpool transfer links

Liverpool are eyeing a surprise bid for Arsenal striker Gabriel Martinelli, according to reports.

The Gunners forward has hugely impressed since joining in the summer, with the goal against Chelsea on Tuesday night his 10th of the season in all competitions.

And according to Football Insider, Jurgen Klopp's side are on the trail of the Brazilian, with a future move planned.

Barcelona and Manchester United have previously had the chance to sign the 18-year-old, but both passed up the opportunity, allowing Arsenal to seal a deal.

Speaking after the Gunners' 2-2 draw with Chelsea, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said he was pleased with how Martinelli has stepped up in the absence of top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

"Absolutely. Not just him, I think Laca [Lacazette] is playing at a really good level even though he's not scoring and Nico [Pepe] as well and everybody that's coming in," he said.

"They are fighting really hard in training to try to convince us to play more - when they question some things I tell them (to) speak on the pitch and this is to speak on the pitch."

With Premier League leaders Liverpool now reportedly interested, Klopp has also previously revealed his opinion on the youngster.

The German heaped praise the Arsenal striker after the sides played out a thrilling 5-5 draw in the Carabao Cup at the end of October.

In an end to end game, Martinelli found himself on the scoresheet twice, adding to his already impressive goalscoring tally.

Following the match, Klopp hailed the former Ituano FC forward as a generational talent.

“That’s really difficult to deal with these guys," he told Liverpool's official website.

"Martinelli’s pretty much the same age [as Liverpool defender Sepp Van De Berg] but he’s a talent of the century, he's an incredible striker, so it’s really difficult.

“Then you have Mesut Ozil around and Willock right, who scored by the way a really nice one, so a team like Arsenal in a counter-attacking mood – we keep them deep, play around them, we lose the ball and then it’s really difficult."
