Jurgen Klopp's Nou Camp words that may come back to haunt him in Champions League

Jurgen Klopp may have inadvertently fired up Barcelona ahead of Wednesday's Champions League semi-final, first leg tie at the Nou Camp.

The game marks the first time that Klopp has been in the dugout at Barca's famous old ground, but it isn't the first time he's ever been there.

Because back in December 2016 - just over a year after he was appointed Reds boss - Klopp took his squad to Barca's Champions League group stage match against Borussia Moenchengladbach during a mid-season break.

And when speaking about the trip in a recent interview, the Liverpool boss may have said something he'll come to regret on Wednesday.

“Once we were there with Liverpool on a Christmas trip in a game against Gladbach,” Klopp told DAZN in Germany .

“To have seen alone that this is just a stadium and not a temple, that was certainly important.

“You see other teams that have a hard time playing there and now we are going to experience it, although of course we hope to do well.”

The German was simply referring to the fact that his players needn't be overawed by the experience of playing against Barca, but that comment that it is "just a stadium and not a temple" is one that hasn't gone down well at an institution that famously brands themselves as "more than a club" on their stadium's seats and in marketing material.

The comment has been a hot topic ahead of the semi-final, and on Tuesday morning Barca's appeared to address it in a message from their official English language Twitter account which read: "This is Camp Nou. Our home. Our temple. Our fortress."

The tweet received several replies referencing Klopp.

Liverpool flew out to Barcelona on Tuesday afternoon after Klopp named his 23-man squad .

The German has included Roberto Firmino, Fabinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the party.
