Jurgen Klopp's heartwarming reason for missing final whistle that crowned Liverpool champions

Jurgen Klopp has revealed he missed the moment Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions - because he was on a call with his family.

Manchester City's defeat at Chelsea on Thursday night confirmed the Reds' long wait was over as they sealed their 19th league title and first since the 1989/90 season - before the advent of the Premier League.

Klopp and his Liverpool squad gathered together to watch the Chelsea-City match on television - but the manager missed the latter stages of the Stamford Bridge encounter.

Instead, the German boss was catching up with his loved ones.

Speaking to the media on Friday, he said: "I called my family 10 seconds before the final whistle. We had a FaceTime call.

"I told them I loved them, they told me, they loved me. It's sad I can't be with them. I told them to leave it on.

"It was a really nice moment.

"I cannot answer all the messages I got but I can read all of them and that is what I will do in the next few days."

Liverpool are 23 points clear of closest challengers City, whose reign as Premier League champions came to an end, with 28 wins, two draws and only one defeat from their 31 matches

And Klopp hailed his Liverpool players after writing their own history by winning the Premier League title.

The German added: "The players wanted to write their own history and stories so they were ready not to compare us with those great figures in this club.

"We were unbelievably good last year and smashing this record is absolutely exceptional. It is really difficult to get there."

On whether he will get a statue like the Reds' previous title-winning managers, Klopp joked: "They all got theirs when they were not here. I want to live for 30 or 40 years!"
